- Annual federal information returnEvery 501(c)(3) files a Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N each year, due the 15th day of the fifth month after your fiscal year ends. Three consecutive missed years revokes your exempt status automatically.
- State corporate filingNonprofit corporations file a periodic report with the state to stay in good standing. The name, the frequency, and the fee differ by state.
- Registered agentYou maintain a registered agent with a physical address in the state where you are incorporated, and in any state where you have registered to do business.
- Governance recordsBoard minutes, a conflict of interest policy with annual certifications, a document retention policy, and a whistleblower policy. Form 990 Part VI asks whether you have them.
- Public disclosureYour three most recent Forms 990 and your exemption application must be available for public inspection on request.
